We’ve all had that moment where you spray your favourite perfume in the morning, only to find it’s barely noticeable by lunchtime. One of the easiest ways to fix this is by layering your fragrance with your skincare. The right prep not only makes your scent last longer but also helps it project in a softer, more balanced way.

Here’s how to do it.

Why Skincare Affects How Long Perfume Lasts

Perfume interacts with your skin’s natural oils and hydration levels. Dry skin tends to ‘drink up’  fragrance quickly, while well-moisturised skin helps hold on to scent molecules for longer. That’s why layering skincare with perfume can be the difference between two hours of wear and all-day longevity, bringing all those perfume notes to life.

How to Layer Perfume With Moisturiser

Want to make your perfumes last longer on your skin? Many factors affect how your perfume develops, but there is a tactic you can use to get the most out of your scents. Here’s how:

Step 1: Start With Hydration

Regardless of your skin type, fragrance lasts best on hydrated skin. After showering, apply an unscented body lotion, cream or oil to lock in moisture. If you want a more noticeable base, choose a moisturiser with a subtle version of the fragrance you’re wearing (many perfumes have matching body products).

Step 2: Apply Perfume to Moisturised Skin

Spritz your perfume directly onto freshly moisturised areas, such as your wrists, neck and décolletage. The oils from your skincare create a surface that holds onto fragrance molecules better than dry skin.

Step 3: Use Layering to Build Intensity

If your perfume line offers a shower gel, body lotion or oil in the same scent, using them together creates a layered effect that lasts much longer. If not, try layering your perfume with a lightly scented body butter or oil in a complementary note, for example, vanilla lotion under a floral fragrance.

Step 4: Target Pulse Points and Clothes

Pulse points ( like the wrists, inner elbows and behind ears) are warmer areas of the body that help diffuse fragrance. For extra longevity, a light spritz on clothes or hair (from a distance) will make the scent linger even longer.

Fragrance-Friendly Skincare Ingredients

If you’re layering skincare and perfume, choose products that won’t clash. Unscented creams, oils like jojoba or almond and shea butter all make excellent bases. Avoid strongly fragranced lotions unless you’re deliberately layering scents.

The Secret to All-Day Scent

Layering your fragrance with skincare is one of the simplest ways to maximise the impact of every spritz. Hydrated skin, clever layering and strategic application can turn a fleeting perfume into an all-day signature scent.
